Agafay is a rocky, arid plateau with no vegetation, with the Atlas as a backdrop. The terrain is dry, mineral, dusty — a real contrast with the city, but in an austere register.
Ourika is a green valley clinging to the mountainside, with agricultural terraces, Berber villages perched on the hillsides and waterfalls accessible by hiking. Distance and journey
Agafay is about 30 km from Marrakech, so 30 to 45 minutes by road. Ourika is a bit further, about 45 km, so 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic and the exact point in the valley.
Both can be done as a half-day from Marrakech, but Ourika generally requires a bit more time on site to enjoy the hiking and waterfalls.
The season matters
In summer (June–August), Ourika is markedly more pleasant thanks to altitude and the river — temperatures are 5 to 10°C lower than in Agafay, where the exposed plateau can exceed 35°C in the afternoon.
In winter, Agafay remains accessible all day (with an extra layer in the morning), while Ourika can be cool and damp, especially at altitude.
