Agafay or Merzouga: which one to choose?
Agafay or Merzouga: which should you choose?
Agafay is a mineral desert (stone, earth) 30 minutes from Marrakech — ideal for a day trip with quad, buggy or camel. Merzouga is a sand desert with the great dunes of Erg Chebbi, 9 hours by road — a complete journey requiring at least 2 nights. Agafay = proximity and simplicity; Merzouga = immersion and iconic landscapes.
Agafay — 30 min from Marrakech, mineral desert, half-day
Merzouga — 9h drive, sand dunes, 2–3 days minimum
Budget — Agafay: €50–160/activity; Merzouga: €150–400/night
Sand dunes — Only in Merzouga — Agafay is a rocky plateau
Ideal for — Visitors hesitating between a quick desert outing from Marrakech and a full journey into the southern Moroccan dunes.
"Agafay or Merzouga?" is one of the most frequent questions from visitors planning a Morocco trip. The answer isn't about quality — these are two radically different experiences, separated by 8 hours of road and landscapes with nothing in common. The right choice depends on what you're after and how much time you have.
Two unrelated deserts
The confusion comes from the word "desert": Agafay and Merzouga share the term but nothing else. Agafay is a rocky, mineral plateau with no vegetation, dry ridges and the Atlas as a backdrop. The ground is stone and hard-packed earth — not a grain of sand.
Merzouga is the Erg Chebbi: sand dunes reaching up to 150 metres high, reshaped by the wind. This is the classic image of the Moroccan desert — golden dunes, camels at sunset, bivouac under the stars. It's also 9 hours by road from Marrakech. For current prices, inclusions and booking, see our solo quad excursion in Agafay.
Distance and time
Agafay is 30 km from Marrakech, so 30 to 45 minutes by road. Everything can be done as a half-day: departure morning or afternoon, return to your hotel the same evening. No overnight travel.
Merzouga is 560 km from Marrakech, so roughly 9 hours by road. The journey is usually done in 2 days with a stop in Ouarzazate or the Dadès Valley. The recommended minimum is 2 nights on site to properly enjoy the dunes.
The budget
Agafay is markedly more affordable: a quad outing costs €50–60/hour, a buggy €150–160/session, a camel ride €35/adult. Transfer is included, no overnight stay to pay for.
Merzouga is a complete journey: transport from Marrakech (€150–300 in shared or private transport), night in a bivouac in the dunes (€80–200 per person depending on standard), camel ride (€30–50). For 2 nights, expect €150–400 per person all in.
Available activities
In Agafay: quad, buggy, camel ride, dinner show, and possible combinations. Activities are motorised and sporty, on rocky terrain.
In Merzouga: camel ride in the dunes, bivouac under the stars, quad or 4x4 in the dunes, sandboarding, and encounters with nomadic communities. The emphasis is more on cultural immersion and landscape than sporty sensation. Morocco actually offers a wide range of adventure activities beyond the desert — this guide to adventure activities in Morocco gives a good overview.
Which is right for you
The choice comes down to three questions: To plan the rest of your outing, read our guides: Agafay desert: complete destination guide and Agafay: half-day or full day.
- How much time do you have? → Less than a free half-day: Agafay. 3+ days: Merzouga is feasible.
- What's your budget? → €50–160 per person: Agafay. €200–400+: Merzouga becomes accessible.
- What are you after? → Sensation and proximity: Agafay. Immersion and open spaces: Merzouga.

You can't replace Merzouga with Agafay, or vice versa. They're different experiences, answering different time and budget constraints. If you only have a half-day in Marrakech, Agafay gives a taste of the desert scenery without the travel. If you have 3+ days and sand dunes are a priority, Merzouga is worth the journey. They're not substitutes — they're two facets of the same country.
Can you see sand dunes in Agafay?
No. Agafay is a mineral desert made up of rocky plateaus and hard-packed earth — sand dunes are found in Merzouga or Zagora, 8–9 hours by road.
Can you do Agafay and Merzouga on the same trip?
Yes, it's a common combination: Agafay as a half-day outing from Marrakech, then Merzouga as a 2–3 day trip later in your stay.
Which desert is more photogenic?
Merzouga offers the iconic sand dunes. Agafay offers mineral scenery facing the Atlas, rawer but less classic. Both are photogenic in their own way.
Is Agafay worth it if you can't get to Merzouga?
Yes, Agafay offers an accessible desert experience as a half-day, with varied scenery that stands in stark contrast to the city. It's not Merzouga, but it's not a substitute either — it's an experience in its own right.
Agafay and Merzouga are not competitors but complements. Agafay is the solution when time is limited: 30 minutes by road, half-day activities, controlled budget. Merzouga is the journey when sand dunes are a priority and time allows. Both deserve their place in a Morocco trip, depending on each person's constraints.
