Activities in Agafay for families: parents & kids guide
Which Agafay activities suit families?
The camel ride (€35 adult, €30 child) is the most suitable for families with young children — no strict minimum age, walking pace, no effort. The Tandem Quad (€60/hour) suits children from around 7–8 years old as passengers. The buggy is more for teenagers and adults.

Ideal for — Families with children who want a desert outing suitable for all ages.
The Agafay desert attracts more and more families, but not all activities are equal when travelling with children. Minimum age, comfort, duration and pace are key criteria. Here's what really works, depending on the children's ages and the family's profile.
The camel ride: families' natural choice
At €35 per adult and €30 per child, the camel ride is the most inclusive activity in the Agafay desert. No driving, no fitness required, no strict minimum age — a walking pace, guided by a handler, on the plateau's trails.
It's the activity we recommend first to families with young children (under 6–7). The camel walks slowly, the guide stays close, and the scenery is enough to captivate children — the mineral desert facing the Atlas is a visual playground like no other. For current prices, inclusions and booking, see our tandem quad excursion in Agafay.
The Tandem Quad: for older children
The Tandem Quad (€60/hour, 2 people) lets a child ride as a passenger behind an adult who drives. The minimum age isn't set by regulation but by the child's physical ability to hold on and stay on the vehicle for the duration.
In practice, most children from 7–8 years old can ride on a Tandem Quad. Below that, staying on the vehicle becomes difficult — vibrations, dust, need to grip firmly. It's a case-by-case judgement based on the child's build and character.
The buggy: rather for teens
The buggy (€150 solo, €160 tandem) is a more powerful and noisier vehicle than the quad. Children can ride as passengers in the Tandem Buggy, but the experience is more intense — vibrations, acceleration, more engaging terrain.
In practice, the buggy suits teenagers (12+) and adults better. For younger children, the quad remains a better compromise between sensation and comfort.
Combining activities to satisfy everyone
A family with children of different ages can combine activities: camel for the youngest (and grandparents), quad or buggy for teens and adults. Most operators, Agafay Ride included, can organise both activities on the same slot.
It's also a good way to turn a half-day into a full day at Agafay — camel in the morning, quad in the afternoon, and perhaps dinner in the evening.
Practical tips for families
A few extra tips to prepare the outing: To plan the rest of your outing, read our guides: Camel ride Agafay: price, duration and booking and Buggy or camel in Agafay: the comparison.
- Bring covering clothing for children — dust is more bothersome for smaller ones
- Pack water and snacks — there are no shops on the plateau
- Request the morning slot for families — it's cooler and less crowded
- Helmet is provided, even for children — the operator adjusts the size
- Bring an extra layer in winter, especially mornings (5–10°C on the plateau)
| Child's age | Recommended activity | Price | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6 | Camel | €30/child | As passenger with adult |
| 6–8 years | Camel or Tandem Quad | €30 or €60/h | Passenger, depending on build |
| 8–12 years | Tandem Quad | €60/hour | Passenger behind an adult |
| 12+ years | Tandem Quad or Tandem Buggy | €60 or €160 | Passenger, even driver depending on operator |
The trickiest question with families isn't age but the child's temperament. A calm, sturdy 6-year-old can do perfectly well on a Tandem Quad; a nervous or slight 9-year-old may be better on a camel. The morning slot remains our automatic recommendation for families: cooler, fewer groups, more relaxed pace. Don't hesitate to contact us in advance to discuss your children's profile — we'll adapt the outing accordingly.
From what age can a child ride a quad in Agafay?
As a passenger on a Tandem Quad, most children from 7–8 can ride, depending on their build and ability to hold on. There's no strict regulation.
Is the camel ride suitable for babies?
Operators generally accept very young children on camelback with an adult, but it's best to confirm directly depending on the child's exact age.
Can you book camel and quad for the same slot?
Yes, most operators can arrange both activities on the same slot — specify when booking.
Which slot is best for families?
The morning slot (10am): cooler, less crowded, and a pace more suited to children.
The Agafay desert adapts to families, provided you choose the right activity for the children's ages. The camel ride remains the safest choice for the youngest, the Tandem Quad for older children, and the buggy for teenagers. The morning slot is systematically the most comfortable for families.
